Happy St. Patrick's Day

The traps are set!  Now ALL my wonderful 1st graders have to do is cross their fingers and wait to see if they caught a wee little leprechaun.
I can hardly wait to see their faces and excitement as they enter the classroom tomorrow morning and see this mess!
We will be playing detective to infer all we can about leprechauns based on what they did to our classroom. We will also be playing all sorts of games, learning about St. Patrick's Day, listening to Irish music and attempting to do a jig.
We will of course be graphing and eating Lucky Charms and doing a simple rainbow experiment too. There will also be plenty of word work activities - including those in my FREEBIE pack below.

Word Work for _NK and _NG

Next week our word work will focus on the digraphs _nk and _ng. Although I had already created a word sort for these digraphs, the word work pack I had created was in desperate need of updating and needed MORE activities to keep my kiddos engaged and provide them with more practice. So, I did some tweaking, and added our weekly regulars: SCOOT recording sheet (for Move It Monday), I Have, Who Has?, Read and Write the Room (for Walk and Write Wednesday), Word Searches, and ABC Order (for Fix It Friday). I also added a board game to use with the 48 word cards - which are also used for Trade It Tuesday, Sorting, and the Monday and Wednesday activites.

You can Grab your FREE copy HERE. Enjoy!

For my fellow Imagine It 1st grade teachers - this goes along with Unit 3.11-3.15.

Short A, Short I, and Short O Word Work and Some Freebies

Over the past 2 years, I have created a number of word work packs to go along with the phonics/sound spellings we cover each week in class. Usually these packs include 40-80 word cards, game boards, word searches, read and write the room and scoot recording sheets, I have... who has, sort cards, ABC order, etc. Some have more pages and activities than others, but my students always love them, and they reinforce the skills we need to learn in a fun and engaging way.

However,  I never got around to creating activities for the first unit in our SRA Imagine It program. So, this past week, I sat myself down and developed 3 packs to go along with Unit 1.  Each of these packs focuses on a different short vowel: Short a, Short i, and Short o.
The first 2 word work packs are already available in my TPT store and the third should be posted sometime tomorrow.

My students absolutely love these activities... and there is enough to keep us busy all week in each pack... even for those fast finishers.

I can't wait to get started and share these with my new class.

Click on each picture to grab your FREEBIE page(s) from each pack.

Enjoy!

/er/ spelled ear and long e spelled ey

This week we will be working with /er/ spelled EAR and long e spelled Y and EY.  I didn't have any word work packs to go along with these specific sound spellings...So,  I created 2 new word work packs over the weekend.

Here's a peek at a few pages of each.

Chim chimney, Chim Chimney,
Chim  Chim Long E
is what I called the first pack.

Since Mary and nanny end with long e spelled y and chimney sweep ends in the ey spelling... I thought I would go with a Mary Poppins theme.

We are Yearning to Learn /er/ spelled EAR is the title of the second.

Since researcher is one of the words I used... along with other forms of the word, I went with a scientific - learning theme.

Each pack includes:
SCOOT game
READ and WRITE the ROOM
I HAVE... YOU HAVE
WORD SEARCH
24-30 WORD CARDS of each sound spelling and an ABC order page.

Both packs are now available in my TPT store... but you can grab some freebies from each by clicking on the pictures above.

Slowing Down

Time to SLOW DOWN! With 2 four-day weeks in a row and so many holidays to celebrate, our first grade team decided to slow it down and only cover one week's language lessons in the eight days. Whew!!!

I felt like I was in over-drive... and trying to push my firsties just a little too hard to keep up.

Can you imagine trying to cover the sound spellings for oi, oy, ph, wr, and possessive pronouns, read 2 stories in your anthology, and 4 decodable books in 3 days - so you can assess on Friday? And if that wasn't enough...just try to throw in Presidents' Day and Valentine's Day into the mix! Yikes!!!

So, we took on oi and oy last week and will cover ph and wr this week.

Note:
For my Imagine It followers that's Unit 7.11-7.15.

In preparation for the week, I created a new wr word work pack and 2 PowerPoint Shows to use to practice decoding wh and ph words. Grab your freebie page HERE. To grab the PowerPoint shows click on the pictures below.

In addition to the word work materials, I also created a new geometry foldable pack to go along with chapters 20 and 21 in our math book. You can grab a freebie foldable HERE. The rest of the booklets are available in my TPT store.

Happy President's Day!

This week my students will be introduced to the spelling patterns /ow/ and /ou/ as we head into Unit 7 of our Reading and Language Arts program.

Each day we do one or more word work activities related to the weekly spelling pattern(s). Most, if not all of the word work activities we will cover this week are from my "Out and Around with Little Brown Mouse" pack which is available in my TPT store. The word cards from the packet will be used for Move it Monday, Trade It Tuesday, and Walk and Write Wednesday. Click HERE to grab the word cards for FREE.

Organizing Word Work Activities and a Long U Freebie

My goal this summer is to ORGANIZE all my Word Work activities and to make sure that I have a pack that reinforces the sound spellings covered each week in our SRA Open Court Imagine It program.

I created a number of packs the last half of the school year and recently completed two more. Now the task is to determine what I have, what I need, and to organize and store each one in a way that will allow me to access them easily when I need them.

The "what I have" and "what I need" can easily be solved with a  spreadsheet and completing an inventory... but how to organize the games boards, laminated card sets, worksheets - That is the big question!  I'd love to hear what you do to keep all these goodies "at hand" when you need them.

Any ideas for organizing ALL these items would be greatly appreciated. AND...of course there is a FREEBIE for just stopping by.

The Freebie is just one of the activities in my latest  Long U pack. If you have a fabulous idea for storing and organizing these pack and are willing to leave a comment below and clue me in... I will email you the entire pack for FREE. Hopefully one or more of you will be able to help me out!

Long O Freebie

Over spring break I watched one of my favorite movie classic - The Wizard of Oz with my two boys. I never get tired of it!

So, when I saw Nikki's (from MelonHeadz Illustrating) adorable Oz-themed clip art yesterday I just had to buy it.  I used it to create this week's word work pack for Long O spelled o_e, oa, and ow.

My students love to read and write the room, do word searches, and play "I Have, Who Has. So I included all of these activities along with a couple of word games. You can grab the pack here for FREE.

We're Wild About Synonyms

This week week we are going to get ... "WILD ABOUT SYNONYMS"!

Why? Well... Late last week, I went absolutely WILD when I saw Nikki's "Where the Wild Things Are" inspired clip art - which I purchased from her ETSY store. And...of course, I couldn't wait to use it!

Since our focus this week in our Imagine It program is Synonyms -I created a 15 page literacy-center activity that includes 80 word cards that match-up to create 40 different synonym pairs, two different styles of recording sheets: one where students must locate both words, then pair and record; the second, lists one of the words and students must find the match and record the answer, and an answer key.  I titled the activity: We're Wild About Synonyms.

I haven't yet decided if I will use the cards in a pocket chart, post around the room, distribute a card to each child and have them find their matching partner, or have the students place the cards face down to play a synonym concentration game... but whichever we have time to do ... I am certain that my first graders are going to GO WILD for SYNONYMS! This activity is available now in my TPT store.

And...just because you sailed by my little blog, I have included a FREEBIE for you! Grab yours HERE.

R-Controlled Vowels

Sorting at the Circus

Over the next few weeks my students will be joining in on some circus fun as they sort words with the r-controlled vowels: ar, er, ir, or, ur, and ore.

I have created a total of 144 words cards - 24 for each of the r-controlled vowels above, sorting mats, read and write the room recording sheets, alphabetized answer keys for each sort, word searches, and a few more sort pages, as well as a "3-Ring Circus" game - (my version of BAM) for this circus- themed sort.
If r-controlled vowels are something your students could use more practice with as well, you might want to check this pack out in my TPT store.

Silly Syllables Under the Sea

Over the weekend I created Silly Syllables Under the Sea: a nonsense word game designed to practice decoding using the rules for open and closed syllables and to help students break apart and sound out those multisyllabic words.

My students love this game and it has improved their decoding skills tremendously. Even my own children (a 3rd and 5th grader) love to play it.
If you haven't yet tried decoding nonsense words with your students - I higly recommend you consider doing so... The students really learn their phonics rules.

On Monday, I began by placing one of the cards under the document camera so we could all see it on the screen. Then, we located the vowels. Next, we decided how many consonants between the vowels.

If 2 consonants fell between the vowels, we learned that you usually divide the word into syllables between the consonants. If only one consonant, then you usually divide after the vowel.

Finally, I taught them that syllables ending in a vowel are called "OPEN" and usually have a long vowel sound. Syllables with a consonant after the vowel are "CLOSED" and are pronounced with a short vowel sound.

When we play the game... we play as if these rules always apply! (Even though we know that there are always exceptions to the rules!)

After I introduced these two rules, I divided the class into 2 teams and they competed against each other. Every child was expected to figure out what the nonsense word was and then confirm whether the child who drew the card and had to read it for their team was correct or not.   I simply tallied each correct answer for the teams to determine the winner.  Every child was engaged!

The next day we played again, same teams, but this time a correct answer sent you to first base (a corner in the room), and the following players advanced you around the bases until you scored a run when you hit home plate. Of course, 3 strikes and your team is out! Another fun activity... and the students' decoding skills... well... All I can say is WOW!!!

Also... now that my students have the basics down, I have a new game to add to my literacy centers. In the small group version of the game, players try to collect as many cards as possible to win. Cards are earned by correctly decoding the words. 6 Shark Attack cards are also included - and if drawn, require the player to return all of their cards to the pile. Just like BAM!
If you are interested, Silly Syllables Under the Sea is available now in my TPT Store. The file includes (90) 2-syllable nonsense words using both the VC-CV and V-CV patterns. A second copy of all 90 cards is included with syllable breaks (example: zip-zot, hi-nog)

Vowel Dipthongs AU and AW

This week our language arts program introduces the vowel dipthongs AU and AW. So, I decide to create a week's worth of activities to reinforce the skills covered in the curriculum.

What I ended up with was a 23-page file that includes games and word work activities using the graphic themes of Astronauts and Space Launch for AU and a western Outlaw vs the Law theme for AW.

The entire pack which is available now in my TPT store includes 4 word games, 40 word cards, AU and AW word sorting mats with recording sheet and answer key, a syllable sort and recording sheet, parts of speech sort and recording sheet, a read and write the room recording sheet, 2 word searches, and a write and illustrate page.

My kiddos love playing these games and doing the sorts, and of course they absolutely love the word searches.

I have included one of them below as a FREEBIE.
