Classroom Mascot or Pet?

Do you have a classroom mascot or pet that students take home for a weekend? If so, what is it? Do students have writing or other activities associated with having their "GUEST" visit? How do you assign weekends and communicate with families?

Next week we will begin our third unit in our reading and language arts program entitled "I am Responsible!"
One of the things I will do to launch the THEME is to begin student weekend visits with our classroom mascot "First Mate Froggy"

Below is a copy of the letter I created to send home.
Click on the graphic below to view or download the actual file.

I can't wait to see what the children write and add to the FROG LOG each week!

  1. we have got a mascot called Norton. kids adore it but i do not let them take it home. the teachers teaching 4th and 5th teachers made a project last year. i am sure you have heard of it before. adventures of stanley. kids take it home and they write what they do with him and they take photographs too and we had a partner school. later we exchanged our projects wth them and learnt about their city. this year we have a partner from France and sending our little Stanley and the girlie- Stacey- to France.
    Kids are sooo excited.

  2. I couldn't open your document. Love the title of Frog Log! We have a class mascot who gets to go home with the kids a week at a time. Class pets don't because I haven't had good luck with that in the past...:( I posted about my mascot on my blog a while back.

  3. Your document wouldn't open for me. I'd love to see it! My ocean themed classroom has a mascot as well, an Octopus named Ollie! The kids just love him! I send him home with them in a bag with beach and ocean themed books and a small bag of goldfish crackers. Love the Frog Log idea, that's super cute!!

  4. Our class has Rex, the bulldog, he was the mascot of my 1st graders 2 schools back!!

I took him to London & now that his journal is full of FUN I can't change him to a husky (my current school's mascot). But, the kids love him all the same & my class has a Disney theme so the student who takes Rex is our "Weekly Mouseketeer"!!!!

  6. Thanks for all the great feedback... I love to hear what others teachers are doing in their classrooms. The file should now be available for download - I had forgotten to "SHARE" it in google docs.

Unfortunately I did not purchase the frog so I can't tell you where to get it. One of my sons won it playing a carnival type game at an amusement park and was kind enough to donate it to my classroom. Gosh I love that kid!!!!

    Debbie,

I love your frog mascot. My preschool class theme is frogs and I am putting together my mascot bag. I was wondering if you could share your mascot letter as a word document and what does your journal page look like? I'll check your website in a couple of days.

    Thank you
